{"id":2043716,"date":"2013-09-25T09:26:46","date_gmt":"2013-09-25T09:26:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/romfilatelia.ro\/romagazin\/en\/product\/maria-tanase-100-years-since-her-birth\/"},"modified":"2021-03-09T13:46:03","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T13:46:03","slug":"maria-tanase-100-years-since-her-birth","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/magazin.romfilatelia.ro\/en\/product\/maria-tanase-100-years-since-her-birth\/","title":{"rendered":"MARIA TANASE &#8211; 100 years since her birth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/romfilatelia.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Maria_Tanase_100ani_M.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2002784 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/romfilatelia.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Maria_Tanase_100ani_M-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"Maria_Tanase_100ani_M\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The one who would be referred to as \u201cMagic bird of the Romanian folk song\u201d or \u201cthe nightingale from the Mulberry Orchard\u201d, Maria Tanase made her debut on stage at the age of 21, in 1934, under the pseudonyms Elise Lam\u00e9 and Mary Atanasiu together with <em>Carabus<\/em> <em>Expres<\/em> musical magazine band.<\/p>\n<p>Gifted with an exceptional musical talent, Maria Tanase improved her mastery through a direct collaboration with famous Romanian composers, conductors and virtuoso instrumental performers.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting of the famous singer with the folklorist Harry Brauner (April 1935) meant a valuable collaboration with the great ethnomusicologist Constantin Brailoiu, who recommended her to the Austrian label <em>Columbia Records &#8211; His Master\u2019s Voice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1937, Maria Tanase had a well deserved international success as representative of the Romanian song at the Paris World\u2019s Fair.<\/p>\n<p>The radiophonic debut in the radio show <em>Ora Satului<\/em> (<em>The Village Hour<\/em>) (20<sup>th<\/sup> February 1938), accompanied by <em>Ion Matache<\/em> folk band, represented the beginning of a brilliant artistic career both in the country and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Bands known to the general public, such as the ones led by the famous violinists Petrica Motoi, Victor Predescu, Grigoras Dinicu, Vasile Julea, Nicu Stanescu, Ionel Budisteanu, Ionel Banu or by the pan flute player Fanica Luca, had successful collaborations with the already highly appreciated Maria Tanase.<\/p>\n<p>On 24<sup>th<\/sup> September 1938, the stage of <em>Alhambra<\/em> <em>Theatre of Varieties<\/em> presented to the public the debut of Maria Tanase as an actress &#8211; <em>with artistic and musical talents<\/em> &#8211; in <em>Constelatia Alhambrei (Alhambra\u2019s Constellation) <\/em>performance.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel with the theatrical performances, Maria sang in restaurants such as<em> Neptun, Luxandra, Parcul ARO, Luther, Continental<\/em>, <em>\u201cPrisma-nalta\u201d from Obor Market, Hanul Ancutei (Ancuta\u2019s Inn<\/em>) being frequently invited to bring her contribution as soloist in concerts with a large audience held at the<em> Romanian Athenaeum, Dalles Hall<\/em>, other halls from the capital city and the big cities of the country, incessantly affirming her love for the Romanian public.<\/p>\n<p>The spring of 1939 marks a crucial event in the singer\u2019s life: <em>the New York World\u2019s Fair<\/em>. Before her departure abroad, the restaurant <em>Luxandra Parc<\/em> offered to the audience from Bucharest a <em>farewell dinner<\/em> to which Victor Predescu\u2019s orchestra took part. The funny menu prepared for the guests contained the following: Tuica de Valeni (Valeni brandy) brought on <em>Trenule masina mica (Train, Little Train)<\/em>, Cold sturgeon prepared after the recipe <em>Habar n-ai tu (You have no idea)<\/em>, Chicken with garlic sauce made by <em>Maria neichii, Marie (Maria, my love)<\/em>, Stuffed beef fillet by <em>Marioara de la Gorj (Marioara from Gorj)<\/em>, and <em>Hop lele, hop!<\/em> Rum coffee. Among the guests present at this farewell dinner we could see Liviu Rebreanu, Ion Minulescu, Cezar Petrescu, Geo Bogza, Ion Vasilescu, Ion Pillat and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Arriving at the Romanian pavilion inNew York, Maria Tanase sang with Grigoras Dinicu\u2019s orchestra in front of the American high officials next to whom we could also see George Enescu, professor Dimitrie Gusti, Jascha Heifetz and Constantin Brancusi.<\/p>\n<p>After returning to Romania, Maria Tanase resumed her artistic activity at <em>Alhambra Theatre of Varieties, <\/em>where she also sang jazz music presenting <em>Folk songs in jazz rhythm<\/em> in December 1939 at Radio Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p>In numerous shows on Radio Bucharest, many of them being broadcast live, Maria Tanase manifested her passion for interpreting popular songs of the old Bucharest from the time of the singing compiler Anton Pann, our first musical chronicler Nicolae Filimon, and from the urban folk atmosphere where the classical writers of the Romanian literature such as Ion Creanga, Ion Luca Caragiale, Mihai Eminescu, Ioan Slavici etc. lived and wrote. Maria Tanase also interpreted vibrant compositions inspired from the Romanian folk music and dedicated toBucharest, which was called \u201cLittle Paris\u201d in the interwar period.<\/p>\n<p>Her first performance in a European and Oriental artistic tour was in Turkey(March 1941) where she performed in <em>Melody Revue<\/em> and <em>Cocktail Revue<\/em> on the stage of the <em>Taxim Gazinozu<\/em> <em>Summer Theatre<\/em> fromIstanbul andAnkara. After two months of shows, the Mayor of Istanbul recognized Maria Tanase as \u201can honorary citizen\u201d of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Employed by <em>Caf\u00e9 Wilson<\/em> in Bucharest as of 1942, Maria Tanase, together with the pianist Leonida Petrescu and Victor Predescu\u2019s orchestra, attracted all great foreign personalities who had concerts at the <em>Romanian Athenaeum<\/em>. It is well known that the conductor Ionel Perlea and the German pianist Walter Gieseking watched the performance of the famous singer for a whole night.<\/p>\n<p>Captivated by the \u201ccharms\u201d of Maria Tanase, the poet Tudor Arghezi affirmed in his characteristic style: \u201c<em>Who utters the Romanian syllable, verse and song as the subtle Tanase? The devil? Not even himself<\/em>\u201d<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Maria Tanase\u2019s debut in operetta on the stage of <em>Alhambra Theatre of<\/em> <em>Varieties in <\/em>Bucharest, was in 1944, under the guidance of Egizio Massini and having Ion Dacian as her partner. Afterwards, there was her theatrical debut in Lev Tolstoy\u2019s play <em>The Living Corpse<\/em> followed by a part in the play <em>Horia<\/em> by Mihail Davidoglu.<\/p>\n<p>As of 1945, after many musical shows and parts played, she decided to continue her carrer at the <em>Vaudeville Theatre,<\/em> which later became<em> Constantin Tanase Variety Theatre<\/em>. However, she didn\u2019t stop collaborating with orchestras such as \u201c<em>Perinita\u201d,\u00a0\u201cDoina Argesului\u201d, \u201cTaraful Gorjului\u201d, \u201cDoina Moldovei\u201d, \u201cFlacara<\/em> <em>Prahovei\u201d and \u201cDoina Banatului\u201d (\u201cLazar Cernescu\u201d) of Caransebes. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Maria Tanase coquetted with film making by even writing scripts. One episode of the documentary film <em>Romania<\/em> was followed by <em>Se aprind facliile<\/em> (1956), <em>Ciulinii Baraganului<\/em> (1957\/1958) and <em>Prin Bucurestii de ieri si de azi<\/em> (1958).<\/p>\n<p>She had her last concert at Hunedoara, on 1<sup>st<\/sup> May 1963, with Targu Jiu orchestra, <em>Doina Gorjului<\/em>, where she had been transferred as a folk singer in 1962.<\/p>\n<p>For her artistic merits, Maria Tanase was awarded the <em>State Prize<\/em> (1955), the title of <em>Emeritus Artist<\/em> (1957) and the <em>Grand Prix du Disque<\/em> given by \u201cCharles Cros\u201dAcademy ofParis (post-mortem, 1965). The Radio, Television, Electrecord and the Cinematography sustained the fulminant artistic career of Maria Tanase by recording with her more than 120 folk songs, \u00adadaptations of the folk music, love songs, variety couplets and compositions of Romanian pop music, interviews, shows and filmed scenes. But, the musical repertoire of Maria Tanase was much wider totalizing almost 400 songs from all Romanian regions, to which we add the songs sung in French, Turkish, the variety couplets and the compositions dedicated to the great artist by the famous Romanian folk music composers, among whom we mention Petre Andreescu, Ion Vasilescu, Elly Roman, Henry Malineanu, Gherase Dendrino, Aurel Giroveanu and Temistocle Popa.<\/p>\n<p>The exceptional singer and extremely natural actress Maria Tanase has remained inimitable. The diplomat and writer Valentin Lipatti wrote about her fascinating figure: <em>\u201cshe had big hypnotizing eyes and a youthful slim body. Her entire appearance resembled a mythological salamander, emerged from a half-pagan Romanian fairy tale\u201d. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Killed by a cruel disease in 1963 (22<sup>nd<\/sup> June), the unique singer who had a huge capacity to communicate with the audience, Maria Tanase remains, after half a century since her death, a living presence of uniqueness in the Romanian folk heritage which she mastered with a remarkable professional authority.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, <strong>Romfilatelia,<\/strong> as a promoter of the Romanian values and personalities, introduces into circulation a postage stamps issue dedicated to the anniversary of a century since Maria Tanase\u2019s birth, a complex and representative artist of the Romanian musical culture and spirituality, a genius singer of the Romanian genuine folk music, according to some musicologists.<\/p>\n<p>Suggestively entitled <strong><em>Maria Tanase &#8211;
